MARYSVILLE, CA (MPG) - Get ready for a theatrical experience like no other as Yuba College Theatre presents Stupid F**king Bird by award-winning playwright Aaron Posner. This fierce, funny, and emotionally raw play opened Saturday, April 12 and runs for three weekends at the Yuba College Theatre. Directed by James Gilbreath, with movement direction by Christian De La Torre, this fearless adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull explodes with modern urgency, biting humor, and heartbreaking truth.
A smash hit since its 2013 premiere at Woolly Mammoth Theatre in Washington, D.C., Stupid F**king Bird has been produced over 200 times worldwide. In Posner’s words, it’s a play about “the small movements of our hearts and lives,” a piercing, self-aware exploration of love, longing, creativity, and the need to be heard. Posner keeps Chekhov’s emotional core but strips away the nostalgia, replacing it with fourth wall-breaking honesty and a theatrical inventiveness all his own.
A tangled web of love and longing unravels: Dev, the laid-back optimist, adores the brooding cook, Nina, who’s obsessed with Con, a tortured young playwright madly in love with her. But Nina falls for Trigorin, a famous writer and the much older boyfriend of Con’s mother, the formidable Emma. Meanwhile, Emma seethes, and her brother Sorn just wants to take his meds in peace. Stupid F**king Bird follows Con as his artistic and romantic frustrations spiral into chaos. With sharp wit and aching humanity, Aaron Posner reinvents Chekhov’s The Seagull for the modern stage, with guts, humor, and heart while questioning the limits of theatre as an art form. Sharp, self-aware, and unforgettable. Whether you're a Chekhov fan or simply love bold, contemporary theatre, Stupid F-ng Bird will challenge your expectations, and maybe even change how you see the stage.
The cast of the production includes Christian De La Torre as Con, Sian Compin as Nina, Alison Loeprich as Emma, Tom Loeprich as Trigorin, Rasam Kaur as Mash, Tori Garcia as Dev, and Cloud Adams as Sorn.
The creative team is led by Director James Gilbreath, with Conrad Cecil serving as Associate Director. The stage and lighting design are by JP Stottmann, while the sound design is by Warren Crocker. Costume design is handled by Karma Matthews, and movement direction is provided by Christian De La Torre.
